Betty Hope Gittens, our beloved friend, Board member and Eldercare Foundation champion, has decided to partake in an 800km Camino de Santiago walk to celebrate her 80th birthday in April 2019, with all proceeds going to The Eldercare Foundation of Ottawa. The Camino de Santiago, from France to Spain, (www.caminodesantiago.me/community/) is the most popular Christian Pilgrim Route in the world and inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.
We asked Betty why she decided to do this pilgrimage and here is what she said:
“True faith responds to the needs of others. My decision to walk the Camino is truly the response to the needs of the seniors whom we serve through the charity, The Eldercare Foundation of Ottawa. No doubt about it… my heart has been moved, from inaction to action….from words alone to deeds that back them up. This is my way to make a mark and to raise funds for a very worthy cause. Through my direct connections I’ve become painfully aware of the needs of the elderly, in the nonprofit long term care homes….and the many significant ways these needs can be met with the help of donations of time and money. Every cent goes toward meeting the needs. All our helpers and volunteers, get paid nothing, and do it because they care…..which is why I am doing this challenging walk.”
